Exciting discoveries at paper day

IMG_0673Thank you so much to all our volunteers for such a great turnout yesterday for our paper collection and maintenance day.  It’s so much more pleasant when it’s not raining!

The paper collection seems to have been boosted thanks to the extra flyers sent out in the last few weeks so thanks also to those who have helped with delivering those.

The scout hut grounds are looking refreshed after a much-needed trim and the highlight of the day was discovering a bundle of old newspapers dating back as far as 1929. Our young (and not so young!) volunteers were excited to read about times gone by, including the Queen’s Coronation and a look back as far as Queen Victoria. You never know what might happen on a paper day – why not come down next time and find out for yourself!PicMonkey Collage

Waste paper collection 14 May 2016

We need volunteers to help unload papers at the hut from around 10.00 – 12.00 on Saturday morning. Cubs and Beavers are very welcome to come and help along with a parent. Scouts who will be helping without a parent will need to bring a signed copy of the permission form (link here) with them please.
We will need a few volunteers to arrive at around 9am to go out with the van and minibus to help pick up the papers. If you (or your scout/explorer) are able to arrive early for this, please can you let us know so that we know who to expect/wait for.

St George’s Day Parade 2016

Sunday 17th April

Approximate timings 1pm – 4pm

The annual St George’s Day service will take place this year in Museum Gardens as the Minster is unavailable due to preparations for the Mystery Plays. This means there are different arrangements from previous years – exact timings will be given at the next meetings in the first week back after the Easter holidays and updated on this page.

St Georges Coll 2015

SCOUTS AND CUBS: will meet at the Eye of York (outside Castle Museum) at 1pm, parade to Museum Gardens for the service and then parade back to the Eye of York with dismissal expected around 3.30pm. Please bring some change for the collection.

BEAVERS: will meet at Museum Gardens in time for the service and will join the parade as it returns to the Eye of York.

Please note this is the one occasion in our calendar when ALL members are expected to attend, looking smart in full uniforms. Please check you have all the correct uniform items now so that there is time to organise anything that might be missing.

Scouts uniform: sea scout jumper, hat, black trousers (no jeans), Group neckerchief, black socks, clean black shoes (no trainers)

Bag2School funds raised

Thank you

We were very pleased to receive a total of 249kg of your old clothes, bags and shoes for our collection this week. Not only that but you sent them on time, tidily packed and with only acceptable items in them – well done! Thank you everyone.

We raised £99.60 – only 1kg short for a full £100!

Paper collections and maintenance Jan 16

We’d like to thank everyone for the fantastic turnout at our last collection day. It was a grey and damp day but our cheery volunteers battled on – collecting papers, adding some more patchwork to the hut and repairing the roof. Well done and thank you to everyone involved.
Our planned paper dates up to the summer holidays are February 20th, April 2nd, May 14th and July 9th (full year dates here).
We use our van and one minibus each time and need a minimum of a driver and accompanying adult for each vehicle. It’s often the case that we’re left wondering until the last minute who is able to help with this and it usually falls on the same few volunteers.
It would be a fantastic help if we could get some names down now for the 4 dates above which would make organising each session a lot less stressful – CAN YOU HELP?

Paper collection & maintenance day

Saturday 9th January 2016

skip & vanAs always, we welcome as much help as possible but as we will be distributing flyers with our 2016 dates at the same time as collecting papers this week, a few extra hands would be enormously helpful.

Any scouts or parents who could possibly spare an hour or two will be rewarded with tea and cake!

Flyers with 2016 collection dates will be available in the entrance porch from next week. Please help yourself and do please encourage friends and neighbours to leave their papers out for us too. A list of the streets we collect from can also be found in the porch.

Papers can also be brought to the hut at any other time and left by the skip. We have placed boxes under the shelter of the skip for you to put your papers in so there is no need to use your expensive carrier bags!

Tidy up time

A huge thank you to the parents, scouts and even a few little beavers who gave up their Saturday morning to help us with our paper collecting and tidy up at the scout hut today.

We kept them all extremely busy – driving, stacking papers, mowing, strimming, trimming, raking and generally tidying up. We hope you’ll agree they did an excellent job and the grounds now look very neat and presentable again.

Water activities day

wa1Our younger members were offered a taste of real sea scout life down at the river yesterday. The lingering mist didn’t seem to dampen their spirits and any nerves soon vanished once they were out on the water having fun.

The Beavers were all able to take a boat trip and some also had a go at learning to row themselves.

The Cubs got a bit more adventurous, heading out in kayaks and canoes either on their own or in pairs.

With the sun finally out later in the day, the cubs learnt why eskimos love their boats and showed off their teamwork and balancing skills. We are very grateful once again to all our leaders and instructors for organising and running this fantastic day and giving up their time to offer this opportunity to the children.
