28 March paper & maintenance day

Saturday 28th March   9 – 12 ampaper collection coll

Plenty of hands will be needed again on Saturday to help collect papers, load the skip and to do maintenance work in and around the scout hut. Our new extended collection route means there are now more paper drop-offs at the hut to keep us busy.

We are still looking for offers of skilled labour for some of the maintenance & repair jobs that need doing but much of the work does not require any special skills aside from a willingness to help out. Please ask to see the maintenance list if you think you can help with something specific. It’s starting to look a lot like spring so the grass might be needing a trim too!

Don’t forget to send a completed permission form if your child is coming along to help without an adult.

St George’s Day Parade 2015

St Georges Day Parade and Service

Sunday 26th April 2015

Please put this important date in your diaries. It is one of the few events during the year that we expect ALL members to attend unless they have a very good reason not to.

Full uniform required.

Scouts meet at Eye of York at 1pm. Beavers and Cubs meeting point and time TBC.

There is an award for best group in the parade this year so we need to make sure we have a good attendance and are all in full smart uniform.

St Georges Day Parade 2015

This years St Georges Day Parade will take place on Saturday 25th April.

All Scouts are expected to attend in Full Uniform

Scouts please meet at the eye of York at 1:00pm

At 1:25pm the procession will leave for the Minster via Tower Street, Clifford Street , Nessgate, High Ousegate, Parliament Street, Davygate, Blake Street and Duncombe Place.

This year there is an award for the Group who present themselves throughout the procession in a positive light to the public .

Thank you to our helpers

Thank you to everyone who turned up to help out with the papers and maintenance this morning.

The new route seemed to go well and more drop-offs at the hut meant everyone was kept busy. The skip is now nearly full again which is great news and the site is starting to look reasonably tidy and looked after.

A special well done to those who bravely tackled the drains and got them flowing nicely again and to the bringer of cake – always a welcome treat!

We look forward to seeing you all again next time – Saturday 28th March.

HQ Maintenance

We have a list of maintenance jobs that need doing in and around the Scout HQ building to keep the hut water-tight, secure, habitable and safe for our children to use.

If any parents have the necessary practical skills to assist with any of this work and would be willing to offer some time to help with the jobs that desparately need doing, please do get in touch – we will put your skills to good use.

Jobs outstanding at the moment include:

Painting garage doors, replacing gates, pointing, repairs to fencing, pipes and guttering repairs, drain design reworkings, wall cladding replacement.

The grounds around the scout hut need regular maintenance such as cutting the grass and trimming hedges.

Paper collection and HQ maintenance – 14 Feb

The next waste paper collection and HQ maintenance day will be:

Saturday 14th February

We have substantially increased the number of houses we have notified about our collections and hope that this will result in many more papers to collect. Of course, that means we will be needing many hands to help unload the van and trailer, fill the skip and collect papers on the streets into piles to make it easier for those in the van to pick up.

The van will be dropping papers off at the hut several times during the morning but as this is our first time on our new route we’re not sure exactly when the drop times will be.  Please be patient and bear with us – we’re trying to make things work more efficiently so there’s less hanging around for everyone but we may not get it right straight away.

Parents, Leaders, Scouts, Cubs and Beavers – please do try to come along and help if you can, anytime from 9am. Proceeds from the waste paper go towards funds for the Scout Group, activities for the kids and help keep subscriptions down.

23rd World Scout Jamboree

23wsj-final-rgb-smallOne of our scouts has been lucky enough to be selected to join the North Yorkshire & Cleveland Scout Unit attending the next World Scout Jamboree in Japan in July this year.

Shortly after being selected, Eliot gave a talk to all the sections about the adventure ahead and he has been busy over the last year raising funds to pay for his trip. We look forward to welcoming Eliot back after the summer to hear all about it.
